Gabriele
Aquilina is a Senior scientist of the Italian National Institute of Health
(ISS). The first years of his scientific activity were focused on the
experimental analysis of the mutagenic activity of chemicals associated with
environmental and/or professional exposure in different test systems, mainly in
vitro. In the following period he worked on DNA damage and repair, in
particular investigating the DNA Mismatch Repair system and its role in the
processing of exogenous DNA lesions produced by genotoxic agents. Since 2009 he
was appointed as expert of genetic toxicology in international committees for
risk assessment; in particular he was member of the Expert panel on feed
additives of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for three consecutive
mandates. He is currently member of the Expert panel on Food additives and
flavourings of EFSA and of the Committee for Risk Assessment of the European
Chemicals Agency (ECHA). Since 2010 he is the Head of the Italian delegation to
the Joint Meeting of the Environment, Health and Safety Programme of OECD and
Italian National coordinator of the OECD Test Guideline Programme.
